About The Campaign

The Oliver McGowan campaign is aimed at the health and social care workforce to ensure they have the right skills and knowledge to be able to provide support to autistic people and people with learning disabilities with well-informed care needed.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) is named after Oliver McGowan, whose inadequate care and neglect led to his tragic death in an NHS hospital in 2016. His mother launched the campaign in 2018.

It is now mandatory that all staff in the NHS and social care services are trained in autism and learning disabilities, in accordance to the Health and Care Act 2022. The OMMT is now the government's preferred training for health and social care staff.

Training

We are now providing this mandatory training to staff across the North East and North Cumbria as part of the Good Life Collaborative. We have employed staff with lived experience of being autistic and/or having a learning disability, to deliver the training. Every week our training team, made up of experts by experience deliver this training to NHS health and social care staff.

Be Cancer Aware

Some of our Expert Training Team at Bridge Creative have been delivering training in cancer awareness through Be Cancer Aware. They have attended conferences at the Newcastle Arts Centre, and delivered training to groups of adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including Innovations day service and Bishop Auckland College Aspire group. This training programme is enabling us to build networks with other colleagues and organisations and ultimately deliver life-saving training to the community.

Inclusive Employment, Learning Disability and Autism Training

Our Expert Training Team have developed new training aimed at employers and businesses of all sizes, to enable them to create inclusive workplaces for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. The training is co-delivered with a facilitator and experts with lived experience. It's an emotive and informative 4-hour in-person training session that can be delivered at your venue.
