Bridge Academy is our latest new service that essentially offers all kinds of vocational training courses and Inclusive Apprenticeships to people with learning disabilities and autistic adults to equip them with the hands-on training, knowledge and skills in order to thrive in the workplace of their desire.
We are now running a series of training programs throughout the academic year. Our first one launched in October 2024 which was "How To Thrive In Your Career" and we have had five adults with learning disabilities attend it each week. The six week course enabled them to build and understand work relationships, understand how to cope in stressful situations and how to set and achieve their own personal goals.
By bridging the gaps in the traditional education curriculum, people will be able to access our services in order to gain learning that is best suited to their needs that will teach them everything they need to know to lead a happy, successful, healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.
The Oliver McGowan campaign is aimed at the health and social care workforce to ensure they have the right skills and knowledge to be able to provide support to autistic people and people with learning disabilities with well-informed care needed.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) is named after Oliver McGowan, whose inadequate care and neglect led to his tragic death in an NHS hospital in 2016. His mother launched the campaign in 2018.
It is now mandatory that all staff in the NHS and social care services are trained in autism and learning disabilities, in accordance to the Health and Care Act 2022. The OMMT is now the government's preferred training for health and social care staff.
Some of our Expert Training Team at Bridge Creative have been delivering training in cancer awareness through Be Cancer Aware. They have attended conferences at the Newcastle Arts Centre, and delivered training to groups of adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including Innovations day service and Bishop Auckland College Aspire group. This training programme is enabling us to build networks with other colleagues and organisations and ultimately deliver life-saving training to the community.
Our Expert Training Team have developed new training aimed at employers and businesses of all sizes, to enable them to create inclusive workplaces for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. The training is co-delivered with a facilitator and experts with lived experience. It's an emotive and informative 4-hour in-person training session that can be delivered at your venue. In October 2024, our staff undertook first aid training which included learning how to apply bandages and dressings on various parts of the body. They also performed CPR training on a dummy using all the proper essential equipment. These skills are potentially life-saving which is why we are honoured to have trained most of our own staff in these things.
