The Oliver McGowan campaign is designed to ensure that the health and social care workforce has the essential skills and knowledge to provide high-quality, well-informed support to autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
We are incredibly proud to be delivering this important training as part of the Good Life Collaborative, contracted by the ICB to train the health and social care workforce across the North East. The training spreads awareness of Oliver McGowan's campaign, discussing the areas of improvement in healthcare and is co-delivered by a facilitator and experts with lived experience.
In addition to the Tier 1 and Tier 2 training, we also run Train the Trainer sessions. These sessions equip your team to deliver the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training programme, covering planning, facilitation, and evaluation. The training will cover the two main Tiers 1 and 2.

Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is named in memory of Oliver McGowan, whose inadequate care and neglect led to his tragic death in an NHS hospital in 2016. In response, his mother launched a national campaign in 2018 to improve training for healthcare professionals and prevent similar failures in the future.
Under the Health and Care Act 2022, it is now a legal requirement for all staff working in NHS and social care services to receive training in autism and learning disabilities.
Please note a free 90-minute online learning module is compulsory for all participants as preparation for Tier 1, Tier 2 or Trainer Training – this can be accessed at www.e-lfh.org.uk.
